The fifth cycle of Hot 97’s Rapathon has drawn quite the crowd this year. Former Degrassi star and rising hip-hop artist Aubrey “Drake” Graham, 25, has decided to participate in the contest.
After hearing about the event, Drake has stated that his intent in participating in Rapathon 5 is really to test his freestyle skills.
Many speculate Drake’s participation is also a means of redeeming himself; the artist freestyled previously on Hot 97’s FunkMaster Flex Show. Flex was not so keen on Drake’s reciting rhymes off his BlackBerry.
An open venue, Rapathon 5 is held annually at Harlem’s Hip Hop culture center on 124th street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. The contest typically showcases over 100 skilled artists and emcees.
Drake has stated that he does not view his fame as advantageous; he simply wants to be treated like one of the guys. The 28 hour long show is also notorious for testing the freestyle skills and stamina of its performers, and when asked how long he wanted to stay, Drake professed that he hoped to be one of the lucky few who closes the show.
Auditions for Rapathon 5 are open to the public, and are taking place on May 3rd, May 10th, and May 12th in Harlem, New York City.
