When the editorial staff heard his EP, we knew that Hi Stakez is the kind of artist that this column was created for. Representing both H-Town and the ATL, this emcee has the talent most aspiring artists lack; the ability to write songs. A strong, yet versatile delivery, witty punch lines, and a poetic flow, Hi Stakez offers the complete package. Like Aspect, he continues to raise the bar for future candidates. Get to know him.
How old are you?
I’m 22 years old and a Houston, TX native currently residing in Atlanta, GA.
When did you start performing?
I began performing in high school, when our school was selected to compete in the 106 & Park’s High School Tour (hosted by Ray J) and I was chosen as a participant. I later performed around various Houston venues promoting my underground albums.
Name some artists that inspire and influence you:
My first musical influences were Tupac Shakur, Nas, & Heavy D. The first hip hop record (or cassette back then), I purchased was Tupac’s single ‘Keep Ya Head Up.’ It was as relevant to me then (only being 6 years old) as it is today, and I carry it with me everywhere I travel. Growing up in a single parent home at the time in Macon, GA, it was also inspiration for my mother, who took on two jobs to support herself and I. In my later years, I became a more avid listener of Hip-Hop, growing up in the No Limit, Cash Money, Ruff Ryders, and the Roc-A-Fella era, which heavily influenced and inspired me to begin making my own music. The first raps I wrote were in the 8th grade to Juvenile’s “Ha” off of his ”400 Degreez” album. Undoubtedly, the most influential album and turning point my musical career came when Jay-Z released “The Blueprint.” The soulful production of Kanye West and Just Blaze left me captivated.
How would you describe your style?
I think of myself as a voice for the lost generation, an artist ahead of his time. Some say I have an old spirit about me, probably because I listen to artist like Willie Hutch, Marvin Gaye, and David Ruffin as opposed to current artists of today’s urban musical genres. Those are the artists that inspire me with their production, storytelling as well as their struggles.
What separates YOU from other artists?
I love music. From the first note played on the keyboard to the last word recorded. I have a tattoo across my chest that reads “Audiophile”, which means music hobbyist. I never planned on having a career as an artist, but I feel my music far exceeds the inept music in Hip-Hop today. I want my music to motivate, inspire, and bring joy to any who listen, even if that means I NEVER make a dime. I’m in it for the love, the art, and the creativity.
Name some artists you’ve performed with:
I’ve performed with several local Houston artists and even boast production credits on three albums released. I have production credits and guest appearances with long time collaborator and friend Twankstar, a former artist of T-Pain’s Nappy Boy Digital. I also have produced Mic Skills of Mission Control, Killa Kyleon, Scooby of The Grit Boyz, and neo soul artist Epiphany.
What advice do you have for other aspiring artists?
Be original, meaningful, and never let anyone hinder your spirit. Use negativity as fuel for greatness and take your time. What you seek with patience will come.
Any shout-outs?
Shout out to Young Money Chris and Twankstar for bringing this upcoming EP to life. My label Actuate Records for always being behind me in any project I partake in. My fans who’ve been there since day one and my cousin (Greg Walker), who gave me inspiration to keep going ’til theres no road left. Also, a shout out to Be’ N Original of Urban Magazine for graciously giving me the opportunity to introduce myself to the world.
