In honor of Women’s History Month, Debbie Allen appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show on March 9 to mark 25 years of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy.
Allen reflected on the academy’s mission to train and mentor young dancers. The program has helped students pursue careers in dance, television, film, and theater. She said her work remains focused on staying present and helping others discover their path.
Allen also spoke about becoming a Barbie doll through Mattel. She called the honor meaningful for young people who want to see artists represented in toys and media. Allen said friends, including Denzel Washington, shared their support when the news arrived.
The director and choreographer also revisited directing the pilot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and meeting a young Will Smith at the start of the series.
Looking ahead, Allen plans to return to Broadway to direct Joe Turner’s Come and Gone by August Wilson.
Allen said her career continues to center on mentorship, representation, and expanding opportunity through the arts.
