Shonda Rhimes Discusses Life Lessons on The Jennifer Hudson Show

Shonda Rhimes appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show on Tuesday, Jan. 6, where she reflected on key moments that shaped her life and career.

During the interview, Rhimes shared that a bout of illness once forced her to slow down, leading her to discover the book series that later became Bridgerton. She said that unexpected pause changed her creative direction.

Rhimes explained that each season of Bridgerton is built around a different love story, giving every installment its own tone. She said Season 4 leans heavily on emotion and character, with chemistry driven by connection rather than formula.

She praised Jonathan Bailey, named People’s Sexiest Man Alive, and spoke about working with Julie Andrews, who narrates the series. Rhimes also said motherhood influenced how she developed Grey’s Anatomy, shaping its themes around work, family, and sacrifice.

The appearance coincided with the 10th anniversary of Year of Yes. Rhimes said one decision during that time reshaped her life. She added that while she still values saying yes, she has learned that “no” can be a complete answer, especially when it comes to her family.

Rhimes also reflected on her early struggles as a writer, saying those years taught her persistence and patience.
