Terence Crawford defeated Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez by unanimous decision late Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium to become the undisputed super middleweight champion.
Crawford, 37, moved up two weight classes to 168 pounds to challenge Álvarez and claimed the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO titles. Judges scored the bout 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113 in his favor.
With the win, Crawford becomes the first male boxer in the modern four-belt era to be an undisputed champion in three weight classes. The bout drew a crowd of more than 70,000 spectators and was broadcast on Netflix.
Álvarez, 35, accepted the loss with respect, saying he was unable to figure out Crawford’s style. Crawford credited his training, movement, and counter-punching as keys to the victory.
The result ends Álvarez’s reign as undisputed super middleweight champion and further solidifies Crawford’s place among boxing’s elite.
