New York Attorney General Letitia James has ordered three Nassau County companies — Aleena Cosmetics, Axabee Skincare, and Singhcart LLC — to stop selling skin-lightening creams containing illegal and dangerous levels of mercury.
An investigation by the Attorney General’s Office found mercury concentrations up to 30,000 times above the state limit of one part per million. The companies must confirm compliance within five business days or face penalties of up to $2,500 per violation per day.
“Mercury is poison, not a beauty treatment,” James said. “We will not let companies profit by endangering New Yorkers’ health.”
The investigation began after reports from health advocates. Testing showed all sampled products contained illegal mercury levels.
Mercury exposure can cause neurological damage, kidney and liver harm, and developmental risks to unborn children. Consumers are urged to avoid products without ingredient labels, those listing mercury or related compounds, or those labeled only in foreign languages.
Anyone showing symptoms such as tremors, memory loss, or numbness should contact the New York Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
