Apple TV has released the official trailer for “Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook,” an eight-episode culinary docuseries set to premiere globally Nov. 6.
The series follows Nora Lum, better known as Awkwafina, as she travels across the country while learning the skills needed to revive her family’s Cantonese restaurant legacy. Her family operated Lum’s, a longtime restaurant in Flushing, New York, but Lum admits she is starting with little experience in the kitchen.
“I can’t cook. Like, at all,” she says in the series.
With guidance from chefs, restaurateurs, and family members, Lum explores Asian American cuisine while considering how Lum’s could be reimagined for another generation.
Her journey includes a crash course at the Culinary Institute of America, a Texas barbecue stop with Jimmy O. Yang, and lessons from chefs Roy Choi and Martin Yan. She also travels to Hawai‘i to explore the tiki culture that influenced her grandmother’s restaurant and later works a restaurant service in Los Angeles’ Chinatown.
The season builds toward an opening-night challenge, with Lum preparing to serve one of her toughest guests: her grandmother.
“Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook” is produced for Apple TV by Twofour. Lum, David Brindley, Itay Reiss, and Caroline Davies serve as executive producers.
