Comedian Godfrey Urges Boycott of Destination Smokehouse After Viral BBQ Controversy

Veteran comedian Godfrey is fueling online backlash against Destination Smokehouse, encouraging supporters of viral barbecue pitmaster Walter “Mr. Tendernism” Johnson Sr. to avoid the Murrieta, California, restaurant amid a dispute that has ignited social media debate this week.

The call for a boycott stems from what fans describe as the restaurant’s handling of a controversy involving Johnson, the charismatic figure whose tender meat demonstrations helped propel the business to viral fame.

Johnson, widely known as “Mr. Tendernism,” confirmed on social platforms that he is no longer affiliated with Destination Smokehouse and plans to pursue independent culinary ventures. In an Instagram video, he said, “No, I’m not at Destination Smokehouse. I’m with Tenderism … I had to go on my own.”

Amid the fallout, clips widely shared online show Godfrey commenting on the situation in a recent episode of his podcast In Godfree We Trust, urging listeners to reconsider patronage of the barbecue brand until questions about Johnson’s departure and the broader business relationship are resolved. The video has circulated with captions urging a “massive boycott” of the barbecue spot.

Destination Smokehouse gained national attention as Johnson’s animated catchphrases and tender meat tests drew millions of views across TikTok and Instagram, boosting traffic well beyond its Southern California roots.

Around the same time, food critic Keith Lee’s highly anticipated visit to the restaurant sparked additional debate after Johnson was reportedly unavailable to receive a large tip from Lee in person.

Supporters of Johnson have rallied on social media and through fundraising efforts, with a GoFundMe organized by the pitmaster’s manager reporting thousands in contributions toward his plans for a food truck and other independent projects. That fundraiser describes Johnson as a “beloved figure in the California food scene” who was “ultimately fired” from the restaurant he helped popularize.

The boycott call by Godfrey reflects growing online sentiment that Johnson’s role in the restaurant’s viral success has been under-recognized. Social users argue that until there is clarity on ownership, compensation, and credit for the viral brand identity, customer dollars should be redirected elsewhere.

Destination Smokehouse has not publicly responded to Godfrey’s boycott appeal. Restaurant owner Nick Yepremian previously said Johnson was “a part of the business” but declined to detail the extent of his ownership or involvement.
