ESSENCE is marking a milestone moment with the return of Editor-in-Chief Emerita Susan L. Taylor as the cover star of its latest special edition. The issue also brings back Taylor’s signature In the Spirit column, a feature that played a central role in shaping the publication’s legacy.
The release underscores ESSENCE’s long-standing leadership in cultural storytelling, community engagement, and Black-owned media.
Photographed by artist Mickalene Thomas and styled by Pamela Macklin, Taylor’s first solo cover is paired with an in-depth conversation with her mentee, author and journalist Asha Bandele. In their discussion, Taylor and Bandele reflect on the evolution of ESSENCE and emphasize the importance of legacy Black media in driving stories with purpose and cultural preservation.

The special edition also sets the stage for ESSENCE’s return to New Orleans for this year’s ESSENCE Festival. The event will continue to celebrate the brand’s 55-year history with tailored programming and deeper community partnerships. Since 2022, the ESSENCE Festival has contributed nearly $1 billion to the local economy. The brand is now expanding its impact with a $70 million investment in its Pipeline Initiative, which is focused on supporting Black-owned businesses.
The special edition and upcoming festival activities highlight ESSENCE’s ongoing role as a leader in Black culture, media, and economic development.
