Filmmaker Ava DuVernay Addresses Trump’s Comments on Central Park Five

On Tuesday, filmmaker/director Ava DuVernay, the show’s creator addressed Donald Trump’s remarks on The Central Park Five.

She told the Los Angeles Times, “It’s expected. There’s nothing he says or does in relation to this case or the lives of black people or people of color that has any weight to it. It’s not our reality, there’s no truth to it. I wish I had a more juicy sound bite, but I don’t care.”

When asked about the case, the president stated, “Why do you bring that question up now? It’s an interesting time to bring it up. You have people on both sides of that. They admitted their guilt. If you look at Linda Fairstein and if you look at some of the prosecutors, they think that the city should never have settled that case. So, we’ll leave it at that.”

The situation has been brought back into the public eye with the new Netflix limited series “When They See Us,” which depicts the events surrounding the case and the lives of the teenagers who were wrongfully convicted.

When the attack occurred, Trump took out full-page newspaper ads encouraging the death penalty for the boys.

The four-part project, which was released on May 31, received critical acclaim and has also created a backlash for the authorities involved.
