Kel Spencer Releases “IP5000,” a Modern Take on Jay-Z’s “Imaginary Players”

Grammy-nominated songwriter Kel Spencer released a new music video, “IP5000,” on Oct. 29. The track serves as his creative interpretation of Jay-Z’s 1997 single, “Imaginary Players.”

Spencer, known as the “Warrior Poet,” said the release is a statement on today’s music landscape. He is part of a group of artists working to restore lyrical skill and storytelling to hip-hop while staying true to its classic roots.

“‘Imaginary Players’ is a timeless record because it speaks to a universal truth: you can’t build a legacy on a lie,” Spencer said. “With ‘IP5000,’ I’m talking directly to the moment we live in, a world of influencers and instant fame, and asking who’s really paying dues and who’s just posing. I have to bring substance to the spectacle.”

The new single arrives amid broader discussion in hip-hop about authenticity and substance. Producer Kwamé, who collaborated with Spencer on Will Smith’s hit “Switch,” has voiced similar views. Kwamé recently released an album, The Different Kids, emphasizing traditional hip-hop sound and values.

Beyond music, Spencer’s work reaches into education and community development. He founded Pens of Power, a community program supporting youth, and teaches hip-hop linguistics as a guest lecturer.

“Kel Spencer has always been a bridge connecting generations of hip-hop, community service, and entrepreneurship,” said his representative, Tiffany Joy Murchison. “‘IP5000’ is his statement on where the culture is and where it needs to go, delivered with the elite penmanship he’s known for.”
