On the latest episode of the podcast Love and Fly Shit, hosts Jenna Nia and Donay sat down with comedian and media mogul Kevin “KevOnStage” Fredericks and his wife, author and entrepreneur Melissa Fredericks. The pair, who co-wrote the best-selling book Marriage Be Hard, opened up about growing up together, navigating more than 20 years of marriage, and running businesses as partners.
“People often find inspiration in the high school sweetheart part of our relationship, but think about who you were at 16 and then I’m 42 now,” Kev said. “Like how much life has happened, how many different ways I’ve seen the world.”
Melissa added: “The work of marriage is when you are required to do something that is not your natural disposition. It doesn’t mean I don’t love this person… it just means it requires something of me that’s not easy for me to come by. That’s the hard part of marriage.”
During the conversation, the Frederickses recalled their early days, including Kev falling for Melissa on the first day of U.S. history class, and why she made him wait. They discussed following each other through college, job changes, and a cross-country move to Los Angeles.
The couple also highlighted how therapy and what they call the “redo” helped reshape the way they communicate, and how they try to model respect and openness for their two sons. Balancing business, comedy, and friendship, they said, has been central to keeping their relationship strong.
Episode 19 of Love and Fly Shit, titled “Marriage Be Hard,” featuring KevOnStage and Melissa Fredericks, is now available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube.
