State investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the death of a man struck by an off-duty Monticello Village Police Department officer in Monticello. The man died Nov. 30, five days after the collision.
The incident took place shortly after 6 a.m. on Nov. 25 near Pleasant Street and High Street. According to information released by the attorney general’s office, the man was crossing the street when the officer, driving a personal vehicle, hit him. Emergency responders brought the man to a local hospital. He later died from his injuries.
The case was referred to the attorney general’s office under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, which directs the office to review any situation in which a police or peace officer may have caused a death. The mandate covers on-duty and off-duty officers and applies regardless of whether the person who died was armed or in custody.
The review now underway will determine whether a full investigation is required. Officials have not released the identities of those involved. The attorney general’s office said updates will be provided as the process moves forward.
