The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced nominations Thursday for the 98th Academy Awards, and Sinners secured a place in Oscar history by earning 16 nominations, more than any film ever recorded by the academy.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, the supernatural thriller earned nominations across major categories, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Coogler, and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, marking his first Oscar nomination.
The total surpasses the previous high of 14 nominations shared by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016).
Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another followed with 13 nominations, including multiple acting nods, and other films recognized in several categories included Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, Bugonia, Sentimental Value and Train Dreams.
Among the acting nominations highlighted Thursday were supporting nods for Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku from Sinners.
This year’s Oscars also feature a new category for casting, expanding the range of achievements recognized by the academy.
The ceremony is scheduled for March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with Conan O’Brien set to host.
Nominees for Best Picture include Sinners, One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, Bugonia, F1, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value and Train Dreams.
As awards season builds momentum, industry observers note the historic nomination haul for Sinners reflects shifting patterns in academy voting and an expanded slate of recognized films and performances.
