The Cure Brings Dr. Sebi’s Story and Legacy to a New Generation

A new book supported by the family of Dr. Sebi is bringing renewed attention to the late wellness figure’s life, teachings, and cultural influence.

“The Cure,” published by Jeff Coby and developed from Dr. Sebi’s original teachings with support from his immediate family, explores his philosophy surrounding plant-based living, discipline, intentionality, and wellness. The book reached No. 1 among new releases following its debut.

Born Alfredo Darrington Bowman in Honduras, Dr. Sebi became known for a wellness philosophy centered on plant-based nutrition, herbs, minerals, and what he described as cellular balance. His approach, known as African Bio-Mineral Balance, attracted followers worldwide.

His influence extended into music and popular culture. Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was among the artists associated with him, while the late rapper Nipsey Hussle publicly expressed interest in documenting his story. Kendrick Lamar also referenced Dr. Sebi in his song “Worldwide Steppers.”

For Dr. Sebi’s family, “The Cure” is also an effort to preserve his story and separate his original teachings from later interpretations associated with his name.

“My father was a remarkable and, at times, controversial figure whose life and work challenged people to think differently,” said his daughter, Saama Bowman. “On August 6th, the world lost ‘Dr. Sebi,’ but I lost the man who taught me unconditional love, wisdom, and service.”

Bowman said the family discovered an original handwritten manuscript after his death that became central to the new book.

“It gives the world an opportunity to look beyond the headlines and the controversy and get to know my father for who he really was,” she said.

The family has also raised concerns about people and businesses it says have used Dr. Sebi’s name, image, methods, and teachings without authorization or direct knowledge of his work. His children and grandchildren have said they want future generations to have access to material connected to his original teachings.

Coby, a former professional basketball player, said preserving that record became a major focus of the project.

“After seven years as a professional basketball player, I made the decision to dedicate my full focus to bringing this project to life,” Coby said. “My responsibility was never to tell people what to believe—it was to preserve Dr. Sebi’s story authentically and give readers the opportunity to encounter the man and the journey that shaped his legacy.”

Blending biography, philosophy, and cultural history, “The Cure” examines the development of Dr. Sebi’s ideas and the impact he continues to have on conversations surrounding wellness, personal discipline, and intentional living.

The book is available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Target, and other booksellers.
