Toronto Raptors’ Jontay Porter Banned From NBA

The NBA announced that Jontay Porter, under contract with the Toronto Raptors, has been banned from the NBA. After a league investigation was conducted, Porter was found to have violated league rules by disclosing confidential information to sports bettors! He even limited his own participation in multiple games for betting purposes and betting on NBA games.

Details of the investigation revealed that Porter disclosed confidential information about his own health status to a known NBA bettor. Another individual subsequently placed an $80,000 parlay, wagering that Porter would underperform in the March 20 game—the bettor would go on to win $1.1M!

Additionally, from January through March 2024, Porter placed at least 13 bets on NBA games while on the road with the Raptors and the Raptors NBA G League affiliate. These bets ranged from $15 to $22,000, totaling $54,094 and a payout of $76,059. While none of these bets involved games where he played in, one did include a Raptors game—where he bet that they’d lose.

The suspicious bets involving Porter’s performance in the Raptors’ March 20th game were brought to the NBA’s attention by licensed sports betting operators and an organization that monitors legal betting markets. These findings are based on the information available to league investigators at this time. The investigation remains open and may result in further findings.

“There’s nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment.” – Adam Silver, NBA Commissioner
