Twelve Angry Black Women Staged Reading Set at The Billie Holiday Theatre in Brooklyn

A staged reading of Twelve Angry Black Women, a play by Andrea Ambam, will take place Jan. 29, 2026, at The Billie Holiday Theatre in Brooklyn.

The one-night event runs from 7 to 9 p.m. and is part of the theatre’s 2025–26 season and its biannual Black Narrative series. The reading is presented by The Billie Holiday Theatre in partnership with Hi-ARTS and Level Forward.

The play reworks a courtroom drama through a Black feminist framework. It focuses on a case set in the United States and decided by an all-Black, all-femme jury during a period of political instability. The work incorporates satire, ritual, and reenactment to examine how Black women respond when resilience gives way to anger.

The staged reading is directed and choreographed by nicHi douglas, a recipient of an Obie Award. Music for the reading is composed by Obie Award winner S T A R R busby.

The cast, appearing as members of the jury, includes Kimberly Marable, Cassandra Freeman, Alfie Fuller, Tina Fabrique, Nile Assata Harris, N’yomi Allure Stewart, Gail Bean, DeWanda Wise, Kai Heath, Adrianna Mitchell, Bisserat Tseggai, and Janelle McDermoth.

The African American Policy Forum will participate as a community partner. The organization, led by Kimberlé Crenshaw, will connect the event to its work on democracy and censorship.

Tickets are priced at $25. The event’s key art was created by Cristian Mera. Audience members are invited to take part in “jury duty” at the Brooklyn theater for an evening centered on performance and civic themes.
