Viola Davis: First Black Woman to Ever Win Best Lead Actress Emmy

Last night Viola Davis made history becoming the first black woman to win an Emmy Award for on a drama series.

The star of “How to Get Away with Murder” gave a very passionate speech that paid tribute to other African American actresses including Gabrielle Union and Halle Berry.

“Let me tell you something. The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”

The 50-year-old actress who graduated from Juilliard has received several awards throughout her career including a Tony Award, Women in Film’s Crystal Award, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Indie Spirit Award.

She has also been nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
