André 3000 has released a new short film, 7 piano sketches, now streaming exclusively on MUBI. Written by André 3000 and Graham Mason, with Mason directing, the film is inspired by and set to the music of André’s 2025 EP of the same name.
The short follows André as he makes his way to work carrying a piano strapped to his back and a notebook filled with sketches. Along the journey, he encounters a cast of characters whose distinct traits and identities complement the instrument he carries. The film serves as an exploration of art, connection, and everyday human experiences.
Blending visual humor with reflection, 7 piano sketches draws inspiration from the silent film era through its comedic style while maintaining a melancholic and introspective tone. The story examines themes of creativity, the passage of time, and the desire to continue making art, presenting them through a lighthearted lens.
The film is soundtracked with a collection of instrumental piano recordings performed solo by André 3000. Parts of the project were composed and recorded before the release of his 2023 album, New Blue Sun, which earned three nominations at the Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
According to André, the earliest ideas for 7 piano sketches originated nearly a decade ago while staying at a house in Texas with his son. The residence contained little more than a piano, beds, and television screens, creating an environment that encouraged experimentation and reflection.
Discussing the EP upon its release, André revealed that the original title was The Best Worst Rap Album In History.
“The original title for it was ‘The Best Worst Rap Album In History,’ and here is an excerpt from the original liner notes,” he said.
“It’s jokingly the worst rap album in history because there are no lyrics on it at all. It’s the best because it’s the free-est emotionally and best I’ve felt personally. It’s the best because it’s like a palette cleanser for me.”
The release marks another chapter in André’s continuing exploration of instrumental music and visual storytelling, extending the creative world established by the EP into a cinematic meditation on art, movement, and self-expression.
