A New Era in New England, Patriots Hire Jerod Mayo

Bill Belichick’s time in New England has come to an end. Yesterday, an official statement was released, ending Belichick’s 24-season run as the storied franchise’s head coach.

After bringing six Super Bowl titles to New England and fostering one of the most iconic coach-player relationships with Tom Brady, the Patriots have big shoes to fill.

We just didn’t think they’d be filled this quickly.

As announced today, the Patriots have made Jerod Mayo the franchise’s next head coach! Mayo, 37, is not only the youngest head coach in the NFL but New England’s first Black head coach! It was reported that Mayo will be formally introduced next week, and some fans are already looking forward to the start of a new era.

Patriots Linebacker, Dont’a Hightower, reacts to announcement via IG Story.

Hiring Mayo was a no-brainer. The eight-year Patriots veteran linebacker joined Belichick’s staff in 2019. Last March, Robert Kraft even hinted at the probability of Mayo becoming Belichick’s successor, stating he was a “strong candidate.”

With the official statement out of the way, the time is now, Patriots fans, to look forward to brighter days. With the team’s uncertainty looming after Tom Brady’s departure, it was only a matter of time for a new chapter to begin. Sure, this transition won’t be easy, but the rebuild has to start somewhere.

Mayo has a lot of work cut out for him; there’s no denying that, but a new chapter awaits.
