Could Dennis Rodman Help Brittney Griner’s Situation in Russia?

Dennis Rodman

Sentenced to nine years in a Russian jail, many have been calling for Brittney Griner’s release. If you’ve been following the news, the WNBA star was accused of smuggling drugs into Russia after she was found with a vape pen & two cartridges of cannabis oil. With failed negotiations between Biden’s administration and the Russian government, former NBA player, Dennis Rodman, has stepped into the picture.

“I got permission to go to Russia to help that girl. I’m trying to go this week,” Rodman shared with NBC News.

While his intentions seem genuine, a senior Biden administration official thinks Rodman’s involvement could do more damage. “It’s public information that the administration has made a significant offer to the Russians and anything other than negotiating further through the established channel is likely to complicate and hinder release efforts.”

Rodman is no stranger to cultivating relationships with world leaders, such as North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. But could he pull this off with Russia? He’s even gone as far as proclaiming himself to be a “basketball ambassador.”
