Miami tourists can spend an afternoon on the water, wander through Wynwood’s murals or, in a new experience, step behind the decks and learn how to DJ.
DJ Beauty and the Beatz, a professional DJ who began learning the craft at age 6, has launched Beatz Lab, a personalized DJ experience at Moxy Miami Wynwood designed to turn music fans into performers—no previous experience required.
Before each session, guests share the music they listen to, whether that means Beyoncé, Sade, house, hip-hop, EDM, old-school tracks, or R&B. Beauty then creates a custom three-to-five-minute mix around those selections.
When guests arrive, she teaches them how to perform it themselves.
“I don’t want somebody leaving Beatz Lab saying, ‘DJ Beauty showed me how DJ equipment works,’” she said. “I want them leaving saying, ‘Wait … I actually just DJ’d.’”
Depending on the customized mix, participants may learn techniques including scratching, looping, beatmatching, transitions, stems, BPM changes, and mashups.
The concept is built around making each session different. A guest who arrives with a playlist full of Beyoncé, for example, will not receive the same lesson as someone focused on house music.
For Beauty, the project represents a shift from performing for audiences to inviting them behind the booth.
She began performing professionally at age 8 and has since built a career spanning more than 15 years. Her work has included performing for former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, as well as appearances and projects connected to BET, the Smithsonian, Amazon, Sony, Verizon, MTV, and the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team.
Beatz Lab places that experience inside Wynwood, the Miami neighborhood known for its street art, nightlife, and creative businesses.
Rather than focusing on DJ terminology or requiring a musical background, Beauty said the goal is for visitors to leave having created a personal memory around music they already know.
Guests do not need to bring equipment. They only need their musical tastes.
