Nigerian artist Tomi Thomas’ incredible music has made its way from Nigeria all across the globe including the UK, Canada, and the United States. The emerging worldwide music sensation shared his thoughts on his growing success, the background of his new single, and what fans can expect from him in the future.

The new video is beautiful. Tell us what was the inspiration for your new single “Again”?
Greetings, sending energy. Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate the love. “Again” is a high-energy, easy summer-ready song about love and rekindling aspects of love that one thought they lost.

What can your fans expect from your forthcoming project, Hopeless Romantic?
Sending love to my fans worldwide, I’d like to say this is gonna be a great body of work that would stand the test of time and introduce a new perspective of sound coming out of the motherland. It’s me expressing fully my perceptions about love and what I’ve learned from my experiences.

How does it feel to have joined a long list of African artists to have their music recognized on a global level?
I feel super blessed, and I’m thankful to God for the opportunity to work in the music business at this level and to have my sound spread across the universe and impact lives is all I ever dreamed of, and I am truly blessed.

Describe the moment your single “Ready or Not” reached number one on the Soundcity Nigeria’s Top 10 Chart.
Wow, that was an amazing day. I was in Dubai, and I had just finished a class at Murdoch University and went into the car with my manager Jenna. I got about 40 missed calls from Nigeria, and we got to the destination and met up with GMK, the producer of the song, and I called home. Everyone was saying it’s number 1 on the charts, tears of joy all around for the team, a beautiful moment, and testimony that good music will always prevail.

Music of African origin or Afrobeat has rapidly become very popular, how do you maintain an approach that is all your own?
Sounds from the motherland are taking over the world, and that’s just that we have the rhythms of the heart and the body reacts to the rhythms in the form of dance. It’s a whole phenomenon on its own, and a blessing to the world.

As a native of Nigeria, can you describe the reception of Black American music overseas?
We digest music because it’s been a part of the scene and culture since the days of real hip hop and rap culture. It’s ingrained in the population and energized us, particularly the last three decades.

What advice do you have aspiring afrobeat artists looking to break in western markets like the UK and here in America?
Always be true to yourself and try to have the heart to make the right decisions. Trust your team and advisors but always come to an informed conclusion. Lastly, always spread love and joy. We all need a little spark from time to time
