What inspired your latest R&B single, and how does it reflect your personal experiences as a female artist in the industry?

The current dating climate is a very taxing one! After being single for quite a while I was blessed to find the person I want to spend my life with. My latest single, “Green Light” is the response to finding “the one”.

This industry is like my dating experience. I’ve met some real dope people as well as some real snakes. As a female artist in the industry, I have to remain guarded with my talents just like I guard my heart in the dating world.

Can you share the creative process behind your recent music video? What message were you aiming to convey to your audience?

“Green Light” was a special video to shoot. Not only because it’s my very first music video, but also because I was able to share the screen with the love of my life and we were able to share a little bit of our city, Fort Worth, with the world.

In your opinion, how has the landscape for female R&B artists evolved over the years, and what role do you see yourself playing in this evolution?

I hope to see more female representation in the continuously evolving R&B landscape. I believe female R&B artists deserve a bigger space in the arena and with the right music and support, I could be a part of that evolution.

Your vocal style is unique and powerful. How do you maintain your distinctive sound while experimenting with different musical genres within R&B?

Thank you for the compliment and observations. The beauty in my style is that it fits well with multiple genres and allows me to be close to limitless with my ability to crossover genres, not only within R&B but outside of it.

Collaborations are a significant part of the music industry. Is there a dream collaboration you have in mind, and what do you think you could bring to the table together?

Collaborations are absolutely a significant part of the music industry. If Sam Cooke were alive, he’d be my dream collaboration. Second to Sam but first in my heart is the lovely, Sade Adu. Together, we could create even more timeless music for the world to hear.

Your lyrics often touch on themes of empowerment and self-love. How important is it for you to use your platform to inspire other women, especially young girls, through your music?

I am very intentional with what I choose to write and like to be aware of how my words/lyrics will be received by those who listen. As a high school educator I strive to empower young girls to love themselves and love on other women as well. It’s important that I inspire as many women as I can to walk in their power.

R&B has a rich history, with iconic female artists who have paved the way. Are there any particular artists from the past who have influenced your style and approach to music?

There are several artists who have influenced my approach to music. Artists like Sade, Missy Elliott, and Alanis Morissette were all great examples of songwriting and structure; while artists like Chrisette Michelle, Erykah Badu, and Damian Marley helped to shape my style and sound.

Music videos are a visual extension of your artistry. How do you approach the visual elements of your work, ensuring they align with the emotions conveyed in your songs?

I believe in staying true to the story. I like to imagine that someone watching my video without sound can imagine the lyrics and be pretty close to mine.

R&B often intertwines with other genres, creating fresh sounds. Are there any unexpected musical influences that have inspired your recent work?

Yes, in fact, my boyfriend is my unexpected musical influence. He comes from a family of musicians and singers like Wayman Tisdale, Tamala Mann, The Medicine Man, and more. But his musical experiences have birthed in him a talent and ear for funk music that has in turn provided me inspiration in funk and jazz music as well.

The industry is constantly evolving, especially in terms of digital platforms and social media. How do you navigate the challenges of balancing your creative process with the demands of staying active and engaged with your fanbase online?

It is sometime challenging to find balance between engaging on social media and finding time to be creative. The best thing for me is to incorporate online engagement with my creative process. This allows me to bring my friends (fanbase) into the creative process with me.
