Joanna Natasegara’s The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable, a documentary exploring the extraordinary story behind one of music’s most controversial albums, will premiere on Netflix on October 16.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Natasegara, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker and producer known for The White Helmets and The Edge of Democracy. It had its world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
The Disciple traces the decades-long journey of Dutch-Moroccan rapper and producer Tarik Azzougarh, better known as Cilvaringz, from devoted Wu-Tang Clan fan to an unlikely member of the legendary hip-hop group’s inner circle.
Central to the story is Cilvaringz’s relationship with Wu-Tang co-founder The RZA, whose mentorship helps shape his creative path. That journey eventually leads to Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, the 31-track Wu-Tang album that was produced as a single physical copy and sold at auction in 2015.
Packaged in an ornate, handcrafted silver box, the album was conceived as both a work of art and a protest against the declining perceived value of music in the digital era. Its unusual release strategy transformed it into a cultural flashpoint, fueling debates over artistic ownership, scarcity, technology, and the commercialization of music.
“For the last 5 years making this film has been a labour of love and discovery for me,” Natasegara said. She added that her teenage love of Wu-Tang and fascination with the secret album initially drew her to the project, but filmmaking revealed a deeper story about “community, talent, tenacity, innovation, and love.”
Natasegara also produces alongside Abigail Anketell-Jones, Lauren Dark, and Vanessa Kirby. Executive producers include The RZA, Joe Gebbia, Jason Ropell, Abazar Khayami, David Kimbangi, Farhana Bhula, Ollie Madden, Trevor Burgess, Gary Hess, and James Costa.
Chloë Lambourne and Academy Award winner Chris Dickens serve as editors.
The Netflix documentary is made in association with Studio Gebbia, Film4, 36 Cinema, and Sony Music Vision and is an Aluna Entertainment and Violet Films production.
