Mez is continuing the rollout for his debut album with the release of the music video for “Platinum Fubu,” featuring UMI.
The GRAMMY-nominated artist, songwriter, producer, and director released the track Sept. 9 through Mass Appeal. The song will appear on his forthcoming album, “Electric Future Gangster.”
Produced by D. Phelps, Mez, Chris Payton, and LDG, “Platinum Fubu” focuses on the gray area between attraction and commitment. Mez reflects on leaving old relationships behind while trying to understand what a new connection could become. UMI responds from the other side, turning the song into a conversation between two people who have chemistry but no clear definition for what they are building.
The record mixes references to Carolina summers, Hollywood relationships, and the cultural nostalgia tied to FUBU with a familiar question: What are we?
“Platinum Fubu” follows “Still Loading” and offers another look at the direction of “Electric Future Gangster.” The album draws from Mez’s work across music, film, business, and relationships, bringing those experiences into one project.
The Raleigh, North Carolina, native has spent years building a career both in front of and behind the camera. Mez gained wider attention for his writing contributions to Dr. Dre’s “Compton,” where he worked on 14 of the album’s 16 tracks. He later appeared on Dreamville’s GRAMMY-nominated “Revenge of the Dreamers III.”
His directing résumé includes J. Cole’s “Middle Child,” along with music videos for Ari Lennox, Isaiah Rashad, and SiR. Mez has also directed commercial work for Jordan Brand and Nike.
With “Platinum Fubu,” Mez continues to bridge music and visual storytelling while setting the stage for “Electric Future Gangster.”
