NBA Players React to Noah Lyles & His “World Champion of What?” Remarks

Over the weekend, track and field star, Noah Lyles, sparked widespread outrage on social media after commenting on the NBA. During a press conference, after winning three gold medals in Budapest, Lyles was asked a question about how to grow or improve one’s game. Rather than speaking on his particular sport, Lyles drew a comparison between track world champions, like himself, and American pro athletes. Specifically calling out the NBA, Lyles stated:

“You know the thing that hurts me the most is that I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have ‘world champion’ on their head. World champion of what? The United States?”

He continued, “Don’t get me wrong. I love the U.S., at times – but that ain’t the world. That is not the world. We are the world. We have almost every country out here fighting, thriving, putting on their flag to show that they are represented. There ain’t no flags in the NBA.”

Of course, Lyles’ comments received backlash; not only from fans but current and former NBA players. From Kevin Durant to Kendrick Perkins, and more, basketball players chimed in. Even Hip Hop superstar, Drake, had something to say in response.

Amidst the growing conversation across social media, one fact remains unsaid: These are entirely two different sports. Basketball is structured as a team sport while track and field is predominantly an individual sport. While individual athletes do represent a country, let us not forget that the NBA is comprised of players from all over the world. Basketball, particularly the NBA, has always been perceived as a “global sport.”

Did Lyles forget that Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, and Luka Doncic, are just a few of the NBA’s international stars?

Speak your piece Mr. Lyles but be mindful of your words.
