San Antonio Spurs Set NBA Attendance Record at Alamodome!

Spurs Alamodome

This past Friday, January 13th, the San Antonio Spurs set a new record! Hosting their game against the Golden State Warriors at the famous Alamodome, THOUSANDS of fans were in attendance. The temporary arena change took place to help commemorate the organization’s 50th anniversary. The exact number, 68,323, was later revealed by Spurs Hall of Fame, David Robinson during the third quarter.

The previous record of 62,046, set by the Atlanta Hawks, when they played the Chicago Bulls at Georgia Dome in 1998, now seems minuscule.

It was awesome. It was cool to see them recognize their 50-year history and all of the great moments that have gone into this organization, the successes and championships they’ve had and the greats that were in the building,” shared Stephen Curry, speaking on the atmosphere.

Curry and the Warriors would go on and spoil the special night for Spurs fans as they won, 144-113.

Obviously, I hate to lose. But with the turnout, how can you be mad? ,” said Spurs forward, Keldon Johnson. “The Spurs fan base surpassed anything we could imagine. That made tonight special.

Joining David Robinson, Becky Hammon, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili were also in attendance. For Warriors coach, Steve Kerr, this was also a special moment. Kerr had won two championships with the Spurs organization as a player, himself. They even played a special video tribute for him!

“The fans enjoyed themselves, even though we were getting our asses kicked,” said Gregg Popovich. “They seemed to be having a hell of a time, so there must have been a lot of beer sales out there.”

The Spurs have truly come a long way. The franchise got its start at the HemisFair Arena in 1973 and has flourished since then as an organization.
