The first trailer has been released for “Mayday,” an upcoming Apple Original film starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh in a Cold War-set action comedy that blends elements of the spy thriller and buddy comedy genres.
Reynolds stars as Lt. Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot sent on a top-secret mission into Russian territory during the height of the Cold War. When the operation falls apart, Troy is left stranded behind enemy lines.
Branagh portrays Nikolai Ustinov, a gruff former KGB agent with an unexpected appreciation for American culture. Although Troy initially believes capture means certain doom, the two form an unlikely alliance that could offer a path to escape while forging an unexpected friendship.
The film is described as a genre-bending, action-packed story that subverts traditional spy thriller conventions by pairing two unlikely allies on opposite sides of the Cold War.
“Mayday” is an Apple Original film produced by Skydance Media. The film is co-directed, written, and produced by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.
Producers include Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger, along with Maximum Effort’s Ashley Fox and Johnny Parise.
