Rakim, known for his influence on hip-hop lyricism, has announced a new project titled The Re‑Up.
The first single, “Not To Be Defined,” features Detroit rapper Lazarus and producer Dem Jointz of Aftermath Entertainment. Lazarus, also a practicing physician, has been recognized by the U.S. Library of Congress for being the first artist to premiere a song from space.
“Not To Be Defined” marks a first for Rakim, teaming up with a Detroit emcee for the first time in his career. The track combines Rakim’s signature lyrical style with Lazarus’ delivery, which draws on his background and worldwide experiences.
“You can’t put me in no box, I am not to be defined,” the chorus says, highlighting the song’s theme of creative independence.
The single was produced by Dem Jointz, known for working with major artists. The song’s message focuses on breaking boundaries in hip-hop, aiming to maintain the genre’s focus on lyricism.
A release date for The Re‑Up has not been announced.
