ASCAP To Honor Leon Thomas With Vanguard Award

The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers announced that three-time Grammy Award-winning artist Leon Thomas will receive the ASCAP Vanguard Award, recognizing members whose work is shaping the future of music.

Thomas, a singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, earned the ASCAP R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap Song of the Year Award in 2024 for co-writing the hit single “Snooze,” which reached 11-times platinum certification.

He will return this year to accept the Vanguard honor, joining past recipients including Victoria Monét, Migos, Janelle Monáe, and Beastie Boys.

“Leon Thomas is one of R&B’s most creative forces today and is reshaping its sound with his boundary-breaking artistry,” said Nicole George-Middleton, ASCAP executive vice president and head of creative membership. “His passion, creativity, and undeniable talent have established him as a defining voice of this generation. We are proud to honor him with this year’s ASCAP Vanguard Award.”

Born in Brooklyn, Thomas grew up in a musical family. His mother worked as a vocal coach, while his stepfather played guitar for B.B. King. Thomas began his career in Broadway productions of The Lion King before gaining television fame on the Nickelodeon series Victorious.

After the series ended in 2013, Thomas expanded his career into songwriting and production, collaborating with artists including Ariana Grande, Drake, Chris Brown, and Kehlani.

On Thursday, June 25, in Los Angeles, Thomas will receive the award at a private, invitation-only event honoring ASCAP’s best hip-hop, R&B, and gospel songwriters.
