An NFL First: Super Bowl LVII to Feature Two Black Starting QB’s

Super Bowl LVII is now set.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles will battle it out as the top seeds from the AFC, and NFC in this year’s Super Bowl. The Eagles earned their spot after cruising through a 31-7 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. And Kansas City held it down against the Cincinnati Bengals, winning on a late field goal in regulation.

It’s already been dubbed a historic matchup. This is the first time in Super Bowl history that TWO Black starting quarterbacks will square off. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts are now set to lead their teams to a Super Bowl ring. This historic feat comes FIFTY-FIVE years after Marlin Briscoe became the first Black starting QB for the AFL’s Broncos.  And THIRTY-FIVE years after Washington’s Doug Williams became the first Black quarterback to start and win a Super bowl.

Not only are Mahomes and Hurts the first Black quarterbacks to face off in football’s biggest game, but they are also the youngest quarterback duo to do so. Not to mention both are in the MVP conversation. All eyes will definitely be on these two and how they help navigate their respective teams to victory.

Super Bowl LVII is scheduled for Sunday, February 12th at 6:30 PM ET. Tune in on FOX.

The milestone was not be lost in the world of sports as Hall of Famers, sports analysts, and fans, alike, all chimed in and gave the QBs their well-deserved props. Hall of Famer, Warren Moon, who changed the way Black quarterbacks were viewed and compared to their white counterparts back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, had this to say below.
