Black Women Film Network to Honor Lena Waithe, Mona Scott-Young, Gail Bean and More

ATLANTA — The Black Women Film Network (BWFN), a pioneering organization dedicated to championing and supporting Black women in the film and television industry, has announced its esteemed class of honorees for 2024. These outstanding individuals will be celebrated during the awards luncheon at the ninth annual BWFN Summit, set to take place on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at the Loudermilk Conference Center in Atlanta, GA.

The 2024 honorees include Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe, founder of Hillman Grad and known for her work on “The Chi” and “Master of None,” who will be recognized as TrailblazHER. Mona Scott-Young, CEO of Monami Productions and creator of the “Love & Hip Hop” franchise, will be honored as RainmakHER.

Actress Gail Bean, known for her roles in “P-Valley” and “Snowfall,” will receive the Black Woman Rising award. Raamla Mohamed, creator and showrunner of “Reasonable Doubt,” will be celebrated as StorytellHER. Additionally, Amber Rasberry, senior executive in film development, production, and acquisitions at Amazon Studios, will be recognized as PowerbrokHER.

“We are delighted to once again present our annual BWFN Summit, thanks in part to generous support from NBCU Launch, Amazon, Aspire TV+, and Cvent,” said BWFN Board Chairwoman Chiquita Lockley. “This year’s theme, ‘Standing on Business: How Creatives Get the Bag,’ reflects our ongoing commitment to equity for Black women in the entertainment industry.”

Now in its 27th year, the Black Women Film Network inspires and empowers Black women through programming and a strong social media presence on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. The annual BWFN Summit offers opportunities for networking, workshops, and panel sessions featuring industry leaders.

During the 2024 BWFN Summit Awards Luncheon, the organization will also announce the recipients of the 2024 BWFN Scholarships, providing up to $1000 in funding to support emerging talent in the film and TV industry. Additionally, the BWFN Short Film Festival will be presented in conjunction with the summit, showcasing the work of both emerging and established Black women filmmakers.

“As Black women continue to make strides in the industry, BWFN remains at the forefront through events like the BWFN Summit and Short Film Festival,” said Lockley. “We are an integral part of this industry, and our presence is only growing.”
