Genius is bringing more of its artist-focused video programming to Spotify, expanding the reach of two series that have drawn billions of views by pairing musicians with live performances and stories behind their songs.
The music lyrics and knowledge platform announced a video content partnership with Spotify that will introduce its “Open Mic” performance series to the streaming service and expand the availability of its “Verified” lyric breakdown series.
Genius said the two franchises, launched in 2016 and overseen by Vice President of Music and Content Rob Markman, have generated more than 3.7 billion combined views.
“Open Mic” features artists performing stripped-down versions of their songs, while “Verified” gives musicians an opportunity to explain their lyrics, creative process, and the meaning behind individual tracks.
The first new “Open Mic” episode featured on Spotify stars Grammy-winning rapper Rapsody performing “Pick A Side” from her latest album, “God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops.” Spotify will also carry a selection of older performances featuring artists including Bebe Rexha, Rod Wave, and Teddy Swims.
A new “Verified” installment released this week features Magnus Ferrell discussing “Asleep Talking,” which was released Sept. 9.
“Open Mic and Verified were created to give artists a space to connect with fans on a different level,” Markman said in a statement. He said the Spotify deal would allow Genius to reach a larger global audience and give listeners another way to explore songs they love.
“Verified,” which began appearing on Spotify through a phased rollout late last year, will add more archival episodes under the partnership while continuing to release new installments. Since its debut, the series has featured artists including Mac Miller, Zara Larsson, 21 Savage, Alicia Keys, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Lorde, Cardi B, Chance the Rapper, and Phoebe Bridgers.
Both series will have dedicated pages on Spotify, and individual episodes may also be recommended on relevant artist pages.
New episodes will be released simultaneously on Genius and Spotify each week. “Open Mic” episodes are scheduled for Thursdays at 11 a.m. Eastern, while “Verified” will publish Wednesdays and Fridays at 11 a.m. Eastern.
