ESPN’s Most Watched NBA Opening Night in 11 Years

The NBA season is back!

More specifically, NBA on ESPN, is back. On opening night, the broadcast peaked at over 4,351,00 viewers, becoming the most-watched in 11 years. It was also ESPN’s second-most-watched opening night ever, according to Nielsen. The doubleheader – featuring the Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks and the Dallas Mavericks vs. San Antonio Spurs – generated an average audience of 2,756,000 viewers which is up from 1,532,00 viewers in 2022!

The new-look Boston Celtics defeated the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden with an average of 2,552,000 fans watching. The broadcast peaked at 4,351,000 viewers at 9:45 pm E.T! It was the most-watched ESPN season-opening early game since 2021 and up 76% from last year’s early game. 

The nightcap, between Dallas and San Antonio, which featured the highly anticipated debut of Victor Wembanyama, averaged nearly three million viewers. At 10 pm E.T., it peaked with 3,903,00 viewers which was up 83% from last year’s comparable game. 

Overall, NBA on ESPN was the most watched primetime programming across all of television – broadcast and cable – for October 25.
