Ethiopia recently announced that the country has planted over 350 million trees within a 12-hour timespan, garnering them a world-record.

As part of the ‘Green Legacy’ initiative, Ethiopia seeks to rebuild land that has endured deforestation.

Millions of volunteers participated in the mass planting which originally sought to plant 200 million trees.

The main motive behind the initiative is to combat climate change. Deforestation has decreased the country’s 35% of forest into a scarce 4%.

The previous world-record holder was India, which planted 66 million trees within 12 hours back in 2017.

The country’s national reforestation program, which was launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, aims to plant 4 billion trees by the end of the rainy season in October.

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture stated that the county’s goal is at the halfway point, as they have planted 2.6 billion trees.
