Jason Lee says his relationship with Kanye West has shifted and the two are no longer in regular contact.
Lee made the comments in an interview with Bevy Smith on SiriusXM’s “Bevelations” while promoting “The Jason Lee Show.” The program airs Fridays at 5 p.m. ET on Radio Andy (ch. 102) and is also available on the SiriusXM app.
“Kanye and I, we’re not that close. We’re not like buddies and texting anymore. He’s doing his thing and I’m watching from a distance,” Lee said in a clip from the interview.
The celebrity podcast host was previously involved in supporting West through a period of personal and professional difficulty.
“I was there in service to what he needed at the time and we had great times and we had stressful times.”
He recounted receiving numerous late-night calls from West, often at odd hours with wild ideas. “It was overwhelming; that mania he experiences can be psychologically intense.”
Lee stated he would rather hold people accountable than cancel things. “I don’t like cancel culture.” “I’m all for a culture of accountability, and I think he’s been accountable.” He also said that West still needs to deal with what he did in the past and fix his relationships with a number of communities. “He has to go through his process of making peace.”
According to Lee, their collaboration ended before they were able to complete planned projects. “It’s disappointing that we didn’t get to finish what we were trying to accomplish.”
