Grammy Award-winning rapper, lyricist, and cultural storyteller Rapsody has released the official music video for her latest single, “Apple Juice.” Released on July 31, the track serves as the second single from her forthcoming fifth studio album, God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, arriving August 21.
Following the release of the album’s title track in June, “Apple Juice” continues to introduce listeners to the world of Rapsody’s upcoming project. The single samples D’Angelo’s “One Mo’ Gin” and pays homage to the singer’s influential Voodoo era through its soulful sound and cinematic visuals. Directed by Patrick Lincoln, the visual features Olympic medalist Will Claye and blends vintage-inspired imagery, warm earth tones, and cultural symbolism to explore themes of Black love, spirituality, and vulnerability. The video also incorporates elements of visual storytelling that reflect Rapsody’s appreciation for artistry, imagination, and cultural expression.
“I wanted this visual story to be cultural, sensual without sacrificing imagination, and an ode to D’Angelo,” Rapsody shared. “Patrick Lincoln and I wanted to create something that honored love, musicianship, Blackness, and visual storytelling in a beautiful way.”
Beyond the visual experience, “Apple Juice” represents a new level of artistic freedom for Rapsody. Written during a recording trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, the track captures the excitement and vulnerability of new love while allowing the Grammy Award-winning artist to explore melody in a way she had not previously embraced.
Reflecting on the creative process, Rapsody shared that longtime collaborator Mr. Porter encouraged her to embrace complete artistic freedom and nurture her abilities. “Good art is just honest and pure,” he reminded her. “You don’t have to be a powerhouse; people just have to feel you. Make them feel.” Rapsody said that moment allowed her to let her heart and emotions guide the creation of the song.
With a catalog that includes The Idea of Beautiful, Laila’s Wisdom, EVE, and Please Don’t Cry, Rapsody continues to redefine hip-hop through fearless storytelling, lyrical excellence, and artistic expression. God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops arrives August 21.
