Last night, Sunday, Sept. 24th, songwriter, recording artist, and visual art luminary Solange kicked off her 6-date tour series, dubbed “Orion’s Rise,” with a powerful performance called “Cosmic Journey” at Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
Solange presented her chart-topping album A Seat at the Table, during the performance, which she directed, composed and choreographed.
Upon its release, the Los Angeles Times called A Seat at the Table a, “potent work of black empowerment and protest that comes at a crucial time.” Attendees of last night’s performance got to see this brought to life as Solange’s show fused music with performance art and explored identity, empowerment, independence, grief, and healing.
Prior to the show, Solange shared the following on Instagram: “Exactly a year ago, I turned in A Seat at the Table with knots in my stomach. If you would have told me then, I’d play it live and sell out Hollywood Bowl, Radio City, Greek Theatre, and Kennedy Center, I wouldn’t have even been able to wrap my head around it. I’m so incredibly grateful for the journey I’ve been able to take with this record, and as we kick off this tour tonight I am filled with an abundance of jubilance and light for all of it….the love, the pain, the rage, the process and the rise.”
The “Cosmic Journey” performance last night and the “Orion’s Rise” tour coincides with the anniversary of A Seat at the Table.
The upcoming tour dates will bring Solange to Orpheum Theatre in Boston, MA (9/28), John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ Concert Hall in Washington, D.C. (10/1), Radio City Music Hall in NYC (10/2 & 10/3), and The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA (10/20 & 10/22). Attendees will also get to check out an exciting list of opening acts curated by Solange including Sun Ra Arkestra, Earl Sweatshirt, Chassol, and Flying Lotus.
