Steel City Legacy Gala to Debut Alabama’s First Met Gala-Inspired Event, Award More Than $40,000 in Scholarships and Grants

The Steel City Legacy Gala will bring what organizers describe as Alabama’s first Met Gala-inspired experience to Birmingham on July 18, combining high fashion with recognition for community leadership and investments in education and small businesses.

The event will take place at the WorkPlay Theater and will distribute more than $40,000 in academic scholarships and small business grants as part of an annual initiative aimed at creating opportunities for students and entrepreneurs.

“The Steel City Legacy Gala is about giving people their flowers while they can still smell them,” founder Kyla Carr said. “Every person we honor represents true impact within our communities.”

More than 40 people will be recognized for achievements in business, media, fashion, leadership, and community service. According to organizers, each honoree has spent at least a decade serving Birmingham and surrounding communities.

Among the confirmed honorees are HICA Program Manager Angelica Melendez, Black Voters Matter Organizing Manager Dee Reed, Irondale Mayor James Stewart Jr., Birmingham City Councilor Latonya Tate, and Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr.

Organizers said attendees can expect an evening featuring avant-garde fashion, entertainment, and tributes to local leaders whose work has contributed to the region.

The gala’s long-term mission is to expand access to educational and economic opportunities while celebrating individuals whose work has strengthened their communities.

The Steel City Legacy Gala is dedicated to recognizing local impact and encouraging the next generation of leaders through scholarships, grants, and community recognition.

Carr, the event’s founder, is an entrepreneur who also leads financial literacy programs, mentorship initiatives, scholarship efforts, and community outreach. She operates several businesses, including Faith & Integrity Financial and Family Tax Services, Hair Maniiacs, and The Revenue Maven, a business education platform focused on helping entrepreneurs identify revenue opportunities and build long-term wealth.
