Stephen Curry has changed the way basketball is played. Now, a new IMAX documentary looks at the work, imagination, and discipline behind the shot that helped redefine the game.
“Portrait of an Artist: Stephen Curry,” opening exclusively in IMAX theaters Oct. 9, follows the Golden State Warriors star as he approaches his 4,000th career 3-pointer, a milestone no other NBA player had reached.
Directed by Gotham Chopra, the 74-minute film examines Curry’s preparation, mindset, and shooting craft while connecting his approach to the creative process of artists in other fields.
The documentary includes perspectives from Viola Davis, Rick Rubin, Patti Smith, and Jon Batiste, using their voices to explore the idea of Curry as more than an athlete.
At the center of the film is Curry’s March 13, 2025, game against the Sacramento Kings, when he became the first player in NBA history to make 4,000 career 3-pointers.
The achievement added another chapter to a career that has transformed offensive basketball. Curry’s range, quick release, movement, and willingness to shoot from well beyond the arc helped push NBA teams toward greater spacing and heavier reliance on the 3-point shot.
“Portrait of an Artist” focuses less on the final number and more on what it took to reach it.
The film captures Curry’s footwork, repetition, conditioning, and attention to detail, framing those elements as part of a creative craft. His shooting becomes the lens through which the documentary examines innovation, confidence, and the pursuit of mastery.
