Rapper Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot in 2020.

Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was found guilty of one felony count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and one count of carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle. He was acquitted on a felony count of intentionally shooting a person.

The shooting occurred on July 12, 2020, after an argument between Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion in the Hollywood Hills. Megan Thee Stallion testified that Lanez shot her after she got out of his car following the argument. Lanez denied shooting Megan Thee Stallion, but he was found guilty by a jury of his peers.

In summary, Judge David Herriford acknowledged that even good people can make mistakes and face the consequences of their actions. He emphasized that, in this particular case, there are no winners.

Lanez’s attorney Jose Baez expressed disappointment with the outcome of the case, stating that he has seen other cases involving death, where defendants received shorter sentences.

“We’re extremely disappointed. I have seen vehicular homicide and other cases where there’s death, and the defendant still gets less than 10 years,” Baez stated outside the courthouse.

The sentencing marks a major setback for Lanez’s career. The rapper was once one of the most promising young stars in hip-hop, but his career has been in free fall since the shooting. He has been dropped by his record label and has been banned from performing at major music festivals.

Although Tory Lanez has expressed remorse for his actions on the night of the shooting incident, he has not explicitly acknowledged his responsibility for pulling the trigger.
