The Art of Writing, a community-centered literary gathering presented by The Life After Prison, took place Thursday, Dec. 18, at the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts.
The event primarily focused on supporting people who have served time and are using writing as a tool for reflection and change. The program connected aspiring writers with resources, mentorship, and peer support, creating space for participants to develop their voices, share lived experiences, and build paths forward through storytelling.
The evening included a keynote address from Be’n Original, publisher of Urban Magazine, whose writing spans outlets such as XXL, The Source, Vibe, King Magazine, Yahoo Music, Hype Magazine, and AllHipHop.com. His remarks highlighted the role of storytelling as a tool for expression, healing, and cultural preservation.
Featured renowned authors included Mike Curry, Patrice Alves, Pastor Donald Osgood, Dr. Ayana Bean, Garrick Thames, and Milton Dosouto, each contributing perspectives rooted in lived experience and community engagement.
Attendees were also treated to baked goods from Lís of Baked by Lís, a New York-based luxury baked goods brand, who surprised guests with her renowned coquito and red velvet cupcakes.
The event was supported by UTEC and the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts.
