Black Sands Entertainment Successfully Funds Animated Pilot

Black Sands Entertainment launched its Kickstarter campaign with the goal of raising $50,000.  The campaign ended on June 16th raising more than $63,437, approximately 26.5% over the initial goal.  The money raised will fund its animated pilot based on its popular comic series, Black Sands.

‘Black Sands’ comics are the story of four royal children using the imagery and mythology of ancient African civilization.  The lead characters are young Ausar, Nehbet, Auset and Seth, who all possess various powers and go on a quest to prove their worthiness to rule their kingdom.

Manual Godoy, a self-described history buff, created the Black Sands story to bring an entertaining awareness to the early African empire. “We never talk about that period. We rarely learn anything about African achievement in history before slavery, so I felt that it was important for children of color to see a story about legends that doesn’t involve European nations.”

The animated pilot will focus on the battle between brothers Rah, King of Kemet, and Apedemak, King of Kush.

Historically, both kingdoms were sister nations. Apedemak married his lifelong crush Amesemi, who used to be with Rah. Due to tragic events, the relationship between Rah and Amesemi was ended. In choosing this plot, Godoy wants to show the height of power that the children aspire too. The broken relationship between brothers brings an emotional element to the fight many will witness with memory sequences.  “We want to try to get the pilot done in six months and have it premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s an ambitious goal, but I think we can pull it off,” says Godoy.

‘Black Sands’ formerly titledKids 2 Kings’ was awarded 4th best indie comic of 2017 by Bleeding Cool and was accepted into the 2017 Just4Shorts film showcase. In the coming months Black Sands Entertainment will have featured appearances at Dragon Con, Keystone Con, and New York Comic Con this Fall.
