Detroit to Honor Amp Fiddler With Street Renaming Ceremony on May 16

The City of Detroit, in partnership with the Amp Fiddler Estate, will officially unveil “Amp Fiddler Ave.” on Friday, May 16, in tribute to the late musician, producer, and mentor Joseph “Amp” Fiddler. The street naming ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at the corner of 7 Mile Road and Revere Street in the northeast Detroit neighborhood where Fiddler lived.

The dedication marks the first official recognition of Amp Fiddler Day, which the Detroit City Council established last year through a resolution sponsored by Council Member Scott Benson of District 3.

Fiddler, a Detroit native, rose to international acclaim through his work with George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Prince, Maxwell, Seal, and others. Known for his distinctive fusion of soul, funk, and electronic styles, Fiddler also played a pivotal role in mentoring emerging Detroit talent—most notably J Dilla, whom he introduced to music production.

“Post-Motown, Amp Fiddler is the common thread connecting generations and genres,” a spokesperson said. “His spirit, generosity, and deep commitment to Detroit’s creative community have made him more than a musician—he’s a movement.”

The public is invited to attend the event and celebrate Fiddler’s lasting imprint on music and Detroit culture.
