Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding Macklemore during a recent Philadelphia concert, speaking directly to fans about Gaza, free expression, and the changes that followed on his tour.
The issue developed after Macklemore used appearances on Sheeran’s Loop Tour to voice support for Palestinians, including saying “Free Palestine” during performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Macklemore was later removed from the tour, according to Associated Press reporting.
During his Sept. 19 performance at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran told the crowd that he never expected to find himself in the middle of a political debate. He condemned the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks in Israel while also describing conditions in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable.”
Sheeran said the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the tour promoter rather than by him. He also indicated that he had tried to work with venues as concerns grew over Macklemore’s statements.
The situation caused further changes to the tour. Beoga, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe, and Finneas reportedly withdrew from upcoming dates in solidarity with Macklemore.
Sheeran also pushed back against the idea of venues requiring artists to submit or approve their remarks in advance, saying performers should be able to express themselves onstage.
Despite the controversy, Sheeran emphasized that his concerts are intended to welcome people with different political and personal viewpoints.
His remarks placed the global pop star directly into a broader debate over artist expression, the war in Gaza, and how touring companies and venues respond when political statements become part of a live show.
