Los Angeles native Gavin Turek takes being all-embracing to the next level. The singer/songwriter has studied many of the best R&B artists of all time and shapes those influences into something completely new. Get to know her.

When did you start performing?
I think I was five or six years old when I started singing solos at church. My mom would sing and practice everyday in our home, so I just watched and mimicked her. I was always performing throughout my childhood and teenage years whether singing, dancing, or acting. It was something that felt organic and innate to me.

Name some of the artists who have inspired or influenced you?
I grew up loving both Micheal and Janet Jackson. Because I trained as a dancer, they were the pinnacle of music in the community at the time. I always loved Stevie Wonder, Prince, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack and the Isley Brothers as well because that’s the kind of music that played in my house. I think I’m still inspired by all of those artists’ versatility, skill and boldness.

How would you describe your style?
Ever evolving according to where I’m at in life! At the core, I’m soulful with a knack for nostalgic melodies and sonic tones. The latest project is definitely in the realm of alternative R&B with heavy funk undertones.

What separates you from other artists?
I can perform. It’s rare to see artists these days focus on their stage presence, providing audiences with a real emotional experience. No matter how I feel or what happens technically, I’m gonna make you feel something. I’m gonna entertain you.

Name some of the major artists you have performed with?
Many people know me from collaborating and touring with Tokimonsta and Tuxedo (Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One).

What advice would you offer other aspiring artists?
Don’t wait for outside validation. Do what you can with what you have right now. It’s enough.
