Jason’s Lyric Stage Adaptation to Premiere in Houston, Launching National Tour

Fans of the iconic love story Jason’s Lyric can prepare for an electrifying stage adaptation as Je’Caryous Johnson, an award-winning playwright and producer, brings the beloved film to life.

Premiering February 13, 2025, at The Hobby Center, the production celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios motion picture written by Bobby Smith Jr.

Launching in Houston just in time for Valentine’s Day, Jason’s Lyric Live will embark on a 22-city national tour following its premiere. The star-studded cast includes Allen Payne reprising his role as Jason, alongside Eva Marcille as Lyric, Treach as Alonzo, Tyrin Turner as Josh, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs as Maddog, and K. Michelle as Marti.

A Story of Love and Redemption
Set against the backdrop of Houston’s streets, the play tells the story of Jason (Payne), a man grappling with a violent past, and Lyric (Marcille), a woman guarding her heart—their love blossoms despite familial challenges, dangerous choices, and looming betrayals. Jason’s devotion to his troubled brother, Josh (Turner), and Lyric’s fears rooted in her brother Alonzo (Treach) create intense conflict as they strive for hope and healing.

“Houston is my home, and bringing Jason’s Lyric Live to life here first is my way of paying homage to the city and its people who inspired this story,” said Johnson. “This is more than a play; it’s a love letter to the community.”
