Nicki Minaj Cancels Saudi Arabia Performance

Rapper Nicki Minaj has cancelled her upcoming performance at the Jeddah World Fest in Saudi Arabia, explaining her support for women’s and lgbt rights.

On Tuesday she stated, “After careful reflection I have decided to no longer move forward with my scheduled concert at Jeddah World Fest. While I want nothing more than to bring my show to fans in Saudi Arabia, after better educating myself on the issues, I believe it is important for me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community and freedom of expression.”

Last week, The Human Rights Foundation published a letter that attempted to persuade the rapper to drop out of the festival, which she was due to headline on July 18.

The Foundation’s president, Thor Halvorssen, released a statement upon hearing the news of the cancellation.

He said, “This is what leadership looks like. We are grateful to Nicki Minaj for her inspiring and thoughtful decision to reject the Saudi regime’s transparent attempt at using her for a public relations stunt.”

Nicki Minaj also added further commentary on the situation on Twitter. In one of her tweets, she stated, “I performed in Jamaica before and when I got off the stage I was surrounded by police with guns drawn. They were ready to take me to jail because they said I forgot to bleep a couple curses…. I could make one mistake and go to jail in a different country where women have no rights. #FreeAsap.”

The fest will be broadcasted worldwide. The country is also reportedly offering electronic visas for global visitors who seek to attend.

The event will take place at the King Abdullah Sports Stadium for ages 16 and older. Singer Liam Payne of One Direction and DJ Steve Aoki are still expected to perform.
