In the ever-evolving world of fashion, designer Patrick Cupid stands out by weaving the energy of New York City into every stitch. His latest collection, Tomorrow’s Journey, is a testament to growth—both personal and creative—blending responsible design with the vibrant pulse of urban life. From sustainably upcycled fabrics to inclusive sizing, Cupid’s work celebrates movement, versatility, and the quiet confidence of the modern wearer.

In this exclusive interview with Urban Magazine, he opens up about the milestones that shaped this pivotal chapter, the romanticism of the city that fuels his palette, and why designing for all bodies isn’t just a trend—it’s a lifelong commitment. Dive into the mind of a designer who refuses to stand still, crafting clothes as dynamic as the people who wear them.

Tomorrow’s journey marks a pivotal moment for your brand. How did you define this new chapter, and what personal and creative milestones led you here?

There are a number of things. For me, it sparked a period of change—both for myself as a designer and in terms of the brand’s growth and next wave of evolution. It’s about accepting the changes underway to nurture the brand’s growth.

One of my key focuses was responsible design. Creating this collection involved looking back at past work to see where the brand has been, who it has appealed to, and why. I drew from artistic influences to develop the prints, colorways, and overall direction for this collection.

You described the collection as embodying movement and versatility, reflecting busy city life. How did New York’s energy influence your design process this season?

New York’s energy is in everything I design. As a native New Yorker, I often discuss with other artists how personal experiences and culture define art. The movement in the collection mirrors the city’s soul—its people, their swagger, and their pace.

I wanted to capture that in the garments’ cut and flow. Many pieces are cut on the bias to move with the body, reflecting the allure of New York’s rhythm—whether you’re on the street, shopping, or out at night. It’s subtle but sensuous, something you can’t take your eyes off.

You’ve elevated your use of materials, transitioning from silk and crepe to sustainably upcycled wool and denim. What inspired this shift, and how do these fabrics enhance the wearer’s experience?

It’s less of a shift and more of a commitment to my brand’s values. I aim to minimize environmental harm and waste. For example, the denim and wool pleated skirt uses fabrics from past collections, aligning with my effort to reduce waste while staying true to my aesthetic.

The collection balances continuity with innovation, retaining classics while introducing new styles. How do you decide which designs to keep and which to reimagine each season?

The wearer dictates that. I listen to my customers—what they respond to, what fits well, and what makes them feel confident. Since the first collection, I’ve noticed how customers twirl in my dresses or skirts. That playfulness and elegance are elements I carry forward.

For new styles, I build on the brand’s foundation. Take the pleated skirt: it’s a staple, but I restyle it to give it a fresh attitude. This season also includes evening wear, like a long Merlot gown that drapes subtly and moves beautifully.

Your palette ranges from bold electric magenta to serene bone white. How did you arrive at these colors, and what do they communicate emotionally?

The whites and neutrals bring calm and elegance—like walking through Soho in winter, head-to-toe in white. The warmer tones reflect New York beyond the cliché of all-black outfits. The city is vibrant, with gardens, lights, and night skies.

Electric magenta, for instance, mirrors the mystical purple winter sky after snow. Other hues, like mulled wine, evoke holiday flavors and the city’s romanticism.

With plus-size ready-to-wear now fully available, how are you approaching size inclusivity in design and fit?

Inclusivity was never a question; it’s an obligation. I grew up around powerful, curvy women who embraced their femininity. Offering a wide size range ensures no one feels excluded. I want everyone to feel beautiful and celebrated in my designs.

Looking ahead, how will Tomorrow’s Journey inform your next creative phase? Is it a launchpad for experimentation or a new foundation?

Both. I’ve learned from the brand’s journey and customer feedback, which will guide future work. But I also want to experiment—introduce new silhouettes and stay unexpected. It’s about evolving, letting go of what no longer serves the brand, and embracing innovation.

Thank you for your time. Your collection is brilliant—truly New York dope. Wishing you tremendous success.

Thank you so much.
